The activities of the Faena Agricultural Company are manifold: among these, the production of oil and wine stands out, products symbolizing the gastronomic culture of Umbria and elements that characterize the landscape. The wine has its own identity with the Conti Faina winery, which relies on the advice of Maurilio Chioccia in the cellar. Then there are the olive growing and the nursery for the production of olive trees, the agritourism, the woods, the walnuts and the arable land, which constitute an all-round production system.
There are about 50 hectares of olive trees cultivation, in which it is possible to observe the evolution of the forms of cultivation in the region. There are, in fact, monocone-grown plants with the traditional varieties of Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo and Pendolino, which are mechanically harvested, but new varieties are also available, the result of patents of the ISAFOM of the CNR of Perugia. The latter have an accelerated entry into production and compact bearing. The planting layouts are 6 x 3 m, while they are 4 x 2.5 m for the new varieties with limited growth. From the need to have the best genetic material was born the nursery for the production of olive trees, based in Perugia, which over the years has become a real commercial activity. Thanks to it, the company self-produces plants for its olive groves but also markets plants throughout Italy and in foreign countries such as Chile, Argentina, the United States, South Africa and France.
At the production of wine and oil, since 1986 Agricola Faena supports the cultivation of walnut to obtain both the wood and the fruit. A quarter of the farm's surface is also used for arable land, with cultivations of wheat, durum wheat, barley, sunflower and the typical variety of chickpea that is small in size, without external cuticle and easy to cook.
Today the company is a rural reality in the round, which also includes the agritourism obtained from the restoration of a Benedictine abbey of the eleventh century, Sancta Maria di Colle Catonis.
